In a significant push towards cleaner urban living, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has rolled out a targeted door-to-door awareness campaign focused on waste segregation. The initiative is currently active across villages and colonies located in the southern sectors of the city.
SHG Women Lead the Educational Drive
The civic body has strategically engaged women members of local Self Help Groups (SHGs) to spearhead this campaign. These dedicated teams are visiting every household to personally educate residents. Their mission is to explain the critical importance and the correct methodology of segregating domestic waste at its source.
During their visits, the SHG members are distributing informative pamphlets at each doorstep. These pamphlets clearly detail the four essential categories of waste segregation: wet, dry, sanitary, and hazardous waste. The goal is to empower citizens with knowledge, enabling them to adopt best practices right within their homes.
Strict Enforcement and Household Survey
The campaign carries a clear message of accountability. Residents are being sensitized that non-segregation of waste will attract penalties. Furthermore, the Municipal Corporation has stated that unsegregated waste will not be collected by its door-to-door garbage collection staff until proper segregation is ensured at the household level.
Running parallel to the awareness drive, the civic body is conducting a detailed household-level survey in the same areas. This survey aims to ensure that every residential unit commits to handing over properly segregated waste. The combined effort of education and monitoring is designed to instil a sense of civic responsibility and drive a behavioural change for sustainable waste management.
Aiming for Systemic Efficiency
The broader objective of this focused campaign is to create mass awareness about a practice that is now mandatory. Officials emphasize that correct segregation at the source is non-negotiable for the efficient transportation, processing, and scientific disposal of the city's waste. By ensuring complete coverage of each household, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation hopes to build a more robust and effective waste management system, starting from the homes in its southern sectors.
