Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Launches Comprehensive Fire Safety Drive
In response to a series of frequent fire incidents in the city's commercial hubs, the Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has launched a comprehensive inspection initiative targeting commercial buildings. This proactive measure aims to address safety lapses and prevent future emergencies, following two major blazes that caused significant property damage and structural concerns.
Urgent Inspections Following Recent Fire Emergencies
The Fire and Emergency Services Department has initiated a city-wide safety drive, directing all station fire officers (SFOs) to submit detailed reports to senior officials in their respective jurisdictions as early as possible. While no rigid deadline has been set, sources indicate that prompt action is required to assess compliance with safety regulations.
Concerned officers are tasked with conducting field surveys and issuing necessary advisories or notices to errant owners and occupiers under the existing Fire Act norms. The urgency of this drive stems from recent incidents, including a significant fire in Sector 22, where the building was declared unsafe due to structural cracks on the second floor, and another major blaze in Industrial Area Phase II, which resulted in the total loss of commercial goods.
Focus on High-Risk and Congested Zones
Officials acknowledge that inspections may take longer in congested zones such as Manimajra, Ram Darbar, Industrial Area, and Sector 32, where fire risks are heightened due to dense commercial activity. Firemen are instructed to evaluate all structures strictly according to the city's Fire Act standards, ensuring that vulnerabilities are identified and addressed.
Notably, many commercial property owners have started approaching the fire department's specialised branch for expert advice on installing required safety equipment, reflecting a growing awareness of fire safety needs. Chandigarh's seven fire stations, each led by an SFO, are coordinating efforts to bolster the city's overall emergency preparedness.
