Canacona Grapples with Severe Water Crisis Amid Pipeline Failures
Residents across Canacona taluka are confronting significant hardship due to a persistent water shortage exacerbated by frequent pipeline ruptures. This crisis has disrupted the regular water supply since early 2026, causing widespread distress among the local population.
Critical Situation at Char-rasta and Beyond
In the past six days, the situation at Char-rasta has been particularly dire, despite the availability of reservoirs at Chapoli and Gaunem. Major leakages have also been reported in areas around Shristhal, Morkhard, and Mastimol, compounding the water scarcity issues.
Councillor Hemant Naik Gaonkar emphasized that authorities are actively working to identify an alternative supply line as a backup to mitigate the impact on residents. "Every possible solution is being explored by us, and I am extending my support to the staff working here," Gaonkar stated, highlighting efforts to address the ongoing challenges.
Widespread Leakages and Delayed Repairs
Mastimol councillor Pandurang Naik Gaonkar pointed out that thousands of litres of water are wasted daily due to these leakages, while residents' taps remain dry. He urged the concerned authorities to introspect over the prevailing situation and take immediate corrective measures.
In some locations, the water shortage has persisted for over a month, with former Shristhal sarpanch Kisan Naik Gaonkar noting that despite repeated complaints, repair work is often delayed or carried out slowly. This inefficiency has forced residents to depend on water tankers or other unsafe sources, further exacerbating the crisis.
Impact on Daily Life and Community Response
The frequent bursts at the Char-rasta pipeline, in particular, lead to the daily wastage of thousands of litres of water, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance. The community's reliance on temporary solutions underscores the severity of the water management issues in Canacona.
As authorities continue to explore alternatives and support staff efforts, residents remain hopeful for a swift resolution to restore reliable water access and prevent future disruptions in this taluka.
