Bhubaneswar Development Authority Launches Major Road Project to Alleviate Traffic Congestion
In a significant infrastructure initiative, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has issued a tender worth Rs 77 crore for the construction of a new 45-metre-wide road. This project aims to directly connect Guru Kelucharan Park in Gadakana with Patia railway station, targeting the decongestion of the heavily trafficked Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan road.
Project Details and Timeline
The proposed road, spanning nearly 3 kilometers, is part of BDA's comprehensive development plan. According to the recently floated tender, construction is slated for completion within 18 months. This initiative represents a critical step in BDA's broader strategy to establish alternative arterial corridors, thereby easing the persistent traffic pressure on one of Bhubaneswar's busiest thoroughfares.
BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana emphasized the project's importance, stating, "This road is crucial from both mobility and planning perspectives. Once completed, it will directly connect Patia railway station with the right parallel road near Guru Kelucharan Park and significantly reduce vehicle load on Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan road."
Land Acquisition and Public Support
The tender follows BDA's decision last year to acquire 18 acres of private land for the project, a process conducted under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. A mandatory public hearing was held, where the majority of affected residents expressed support.
A social impact assessment report indicated that 94 individuals in Chandrasekharpur, 58 in Patia, and five property owners in Gadakana were impacted by the land acquisition. Ramesh Behera, a resident of Gadakana whose land lies along the proposed alignment, commented, "There was apprehension initially, but people were convinced once officials explained the compensation provisions under the Act. Better roads will ultimately benefit everyone."
Enhanced Connectivity and Economic Impact
Officials highlighted that the new road will not only alleviate traffic on the Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan stretch but also boost connectivity to residential areas in Patia, Chandrasekharpur, Gadakana, and Damana. Additionally, it will improve access to the railway station and nearby IT and institutional hubs, including the Infocity area.
Urban planning experts foresee positive economic ramifications. Real estate expert Nigam Ojha noted, "Such high-capacity roads generally lead to appreciation in land value and better commercial activity. The Patia belt is already growing fast, and improved connectivity will accelerate the momentum."
Community Expectations and Future Plans
Local residents have welcomed the project while stressing the need for timely execution. Sabita Mohanty of Patia remarked, "Traffic has become unbearable, especially during peak hours. If the road is completed on schedule, it will be a big relief for commuters. Officials should focus on timely completion."
Notably, BDA has planned six alternative roads—three on each side of the Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan road—as part of a long-term decongestion strategy. Officials added, "With this tender, we are entering the execution phase of one of the most critical links in the city's road network."
