Vikramshila Setu Bridge in Bhagalpur Faces Safety Scrutiny After Pillar Incident
In Bhagalpur, Bihar, authorities have initiated a comprehensive safety review of the Vikramshila Setu bridge spanning the Ganga River. This action follows damage to a redundant jacket ring surrounding the bridge's pillars, which occurred on Friday evening. The incident sparked local concerns about potential structural issues, prompting immediate response from road construction officials.
Engineering Experts Consulted for Precautionary Assessment
The National Highway Wing of the State Road Construction Department (RCD) and the Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL) have jointly sought opinions from engineering specialists. Although preliminary inspections confirm no harm to the main structural pillars or reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slabs, district officials advocate for a thorough structural audit to ensure long-term safety.
Sanjay Bharati, Chief Engineer of the National Highway (South) Wing, RCD, emphasized that the bridge remains fully operational. "Vikramshila Setu is completely safe, and normal vehicular traffic continues without any disruption," he stated. "There is no damage to the primary structures or pillars. We are consulting experts as a precaution and will implement their recommendations to safeguard the bridge."
What a Structural Audit Entails for Bridge Safety
A structural audit involves a detailed examination of RCC bridges or buildings to evaluate overall stability and identify potential hazards. According to a civil engineer from Bhagalpur College of Engineering, this process assesses critical load-bearing elements such as:
- Foundations of RCC structures
- Columns, beams, and slabs
- Signs of deterioration like widening cracks or water seepage
This audit aims to detect any visible distress in the bridge's framework, providing a scientific basis for necessary interventions.
Ongoing Monitoring and Historical Context of the Bridge
Sub-divisional Officer (Sadar) Vikas Kumar reported that authorities are closely monitoring the situation alongside engineering experts from the national highway wing and BRPNNL. "Required interventions will be carried out after the structural audit," Kumar explained, highlighting the bridge's significance as a vital link connecting the southern and northern banks of the Ganga.
The Vikramshila Setu, which became fully functional over 25 years ago in 2001, serves as a crucial transportation artery in the region. Its continued safety is paramount for daily commuters and economic activities.
As inspections proceed, officials reassure the public that the bridge's integrity is intact, with all measures being taken proactively to address any minor concerns. The focus remains on maintaining this essential infrastructure without compromising public safety.
