The 77th Armed Forces Flag Day campaign was officially launched in Chandigarh on Sunday, with a ceremonial flag pinning ceremony marking the commencement of nationwide observances. The event highlighted the nation's enduring commitment to supporting its military veterans and their families.
Governor Kataria Launches Campaign with Personal Contribution
Punjab Governor and Union Territory Administrator, Gulab Chand Kataria, formally inaugurated the campaign. The ceremonial flag was pinned on his attire by Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav, who also serves as the President of the Zila Sainik Board. Demonstrating his support for the cause, Governor Kataria announced a significant personal contribution of ₹1 lakh from the Governor's Welfare Fund.
New Welfare Initiatives for Veterans and Families
During the event, DC Yadav briefed the Governor on the latest welfare schemes introduced for ex-servicemen, widows, and their wards. These initiatives are designed to provide enhanced support and assistance to those who have served the nation and their dependents, addressing their specific needs in areas such as healthcare, education, and livelihood.
A Tribute to Year-Round Sacrifice
The UT administration used the occasion to reiterate the immense sacrifices made by the Armed Forces. Officials emphasized that soldiers serve the nation relentlessly throughout the year, guarding India's land, air, and sea frontiers under the most challenging conditions. The statement noted that even during peacetime, many soldiers sacrifice their lives or sustain injuries while combating terrorism and other anti-social elements.
The History of a National Tradition
To honour this continuous service and sacrifice, the Government of India designated December 7 as the Armed Forces Flag Day in July 1948. Since then, the day has evolved into a respected annual tradition observed across the country. It serves as a reminder for citizens to contribute to the welfare of armed forces personnel and their families, ensuring they are cared for long after their active service ends.
The inauguration in Chandigarh sets the tone for similar events and fundraising efforts across India, reinforcing the vital bond between the nation and its defenders.
