In a significant move to facilitate hassle-free celebrations, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has announced that the Aqua Line will operate throughout the night on New Year's Eve. This special service is designed to offer continuous connectivity, enabling Mumbaikars to revel without worrying about their commute home.
Aqua Line's Festive Night Schedule
The Mumbai Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Aqua Line, will not follow its regular closing time on December 31, 2025. Instead, services will commence after 10:30 PM and continue running until the start of regular operations at 5:55 AM on January 1, 2026. The MMRC, in an official press release, stated that this initiative focuses on providing uninterrupted travel during the festive period, allowing citizens to enjoy their celebrations fully.
Coordinated Night Transport Across Mumbai
The Aqua Line, which connects Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade, is not the only transport service extending its hours. In a coordinated effort, the Central Railway (CR), Western Railway (WR), and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking will also run special night services.
Railways will run 12 additional train services through the night, with a breakdown of eight services on the Western Railway and four on the Central Railway.
For road travel, BEST has organized special bus services to key celebration spots like the Gateway of India, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai, and Marve. The additional services will cover the following routes:
- Regular bus routes: C86, 203, 231.
- Air-conditioned bus routes: A-21, A-112, A-116, A-247, A-272, A-294.
These buses are scheduled to run at frequent intervals, every 15 to 30 minutes, to accommodate the expected crowds. Subject to demand, the popular "Heritage Tour" bus will also operate through the night, starting from 5:30 PM on New Year's Eve.
Ensuring a Smooth and Safe Celebration
This comprehensive night transport plan by Mumbai's major transit authorities underscores a commitment to public safety and convenience. By ensuring that trains and buses are available through the early hours, the authorities aim to reduce congestion, discourage drunk driving, and provide a reliable option for thousands of celebrants. The move is expected to significantly ease the annual year-end travel crunch in the city.
