Election Commission Announces Significant Pay Hike for Poll Officials Ahead of State Elections
In a major move to ensure adequate compensation for election personnel, the Election Commission of India has substantially increased remuneration for presiding officers, polling staff, counting assistants, micro-observers, and various other officials involved in conducting polls. This decision comes just ahead of crucial assembly elections scheduled for next month in five states and union territories.
Revised Pay Structure for Core Polling Teams
The revised compensation structure aims to provide fair incentives for staff who work long and demanding hours during the electoral process. According to an official statement released on Wednesday, the daily allowance for presiding officers has been raised from Rs 350 to Rs 500 per day, or a total one-time payment of Rs 2,000 for the entire assignment period.
Polling officers will now receive Rs 400 per day, a significant increase from the previous Rs 250, or alternatively a one-time payment of Rs 1,600. Counting assistants have seen their daily pay rise to Rs 450 from Rs 250, with a one-time total of Rs 1,350 available as an option.
Fourth-class staff working directly at polling stations will now get Rs 350 daily, up from Rs 200, or Rs 1,400 as a one-time payment. Staff assigned to call centres or control rooms in the same category will receive a one-time allowance of Rs 1,000, replacing the earlier daily rate of Rs 200.
Enhanced Compensation for Support Teams and Micro-Observers
The pay hike extends to various support teams including video surveillance, video monitoring, accounting, control room, and call centre personnel. For Class I and II staff, one-time remuneration has increased substantially from Rs 1,200 to Rs 3,000. Class III staff will now receive Rs 2,000, up from the previous Rs 1,000.
Micro-observers, who play a crucial role in monitoring polling activities, will now receive Rs 2,000 as a one-time payment, doubling from the earlier Rs 1,000. Daily tiffin allowances for polling staff, police personnel, mobile teams, and home guards have also been increased significantly from Rs 150 to Rs 500 per day.
Pay Enhancements for Senior Officials and Security Personnel
The compensation revision also includes senior officials deployed for election duties. Deputy District Election Officers (DEOs) will now receive at least one month's basic pay as honorarium. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) gazetted officers and inspectors at various levels will see their allowances significantly raised depending on the length of their election duty.
The revised rates for CAPF officers include: for gazetted officers serving up to 15 days, Rs 4,000 instead of Rs 2,500; for longer durations, Rs 2,000 per week instead of Rs 1,250. Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors (SIs), Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs), and equivalent staff will get Rs 3,000 for up to 15 days, and Rs 1,500 per week for longer periods, compared to earlier rates of Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 respectively.
Election Context and Implementation
These revised compensation rates come ahead of assembly elections scheduled for next month in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and the union territory of Puducherry. The official emphasized that the enhanced remuneration structure is designed to ensure adequate compensation and incentivize staff working under challenging conditions during the electoral process.
The comprehensive pay hike across multiple categories of election personnel reflects the Election Commission's commitment to recognizing the demanding nature of election duties and ensuring that those responsible for conducting free and fair polls receive appropriate compensation for their crucial work in India's democratic process.
