APSRTC Announces Stringent Safety Measures for Senior Citizens and PwDs
The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has rolled out a comprehensive set of strict measures aimed at significantly enhancing travel safety, dignity, and convenience for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PwDs). This initiative comes as a direct response to a growing number of complaints from these vulnerable passenger groups, highlighting persistent issues in the public transport system.
Addressing Passenger Complaints and Negligence
Officials have acknowledged multiple instances of negligence that have compromised the travel experience for eligible passengers. Key problems identified include:
- Improper identification and marking of seats specifically earmarked for senior citizens and PwDs.
- Unauthorized occupation of these reserved seats by other commuters.
- Lack of timely and effective intervention by onboard staff to address these violations.
- Inadequate assistance and respect extended to senior citizens and persons with disabilities during their journeys.
These issues have led to significant difficulties, prompting the APSRTC to take decisive action to rectify the situation and restore confidence among these passenger segments.
New Guidelines and Enforcement Protocols
To tackle these concerns head-on, the APSRTC has issued clear and firm instructions to all concerned officials and staff members. The corporation mandates that:
- Seats earmarked for senior citizens and PwDs must be strictly allocated to them without fail across all APSRTC services, including buses and other transport modes.
- Staff members are required to actively intervene whenever other commuters occupy these reserved seats, ensuring immediate compliance with the seating rules.
- All personnel must treat senior citizens and persons with disabilities with the utmost courtesy and dignity at all times.
The APSRTC has issued a stern warning that strict disciplinary action will be taken against any staff member found mistreating or neglecting these passengers. This zero-tolerance policy underscores the corporation's commitment to passenger welfare.
Streamlined Identity Verification and Awareness Campaigns
In a passenger-friendly move, the APSRTC has clarified and simplified the identity verification process for senior citizens and PwDs. Valid identity proofs accepted now include:
- Aadhaar card
- Voter ID card
- PAN card
- Passport
Importantly, these documents will be accepted in both physical and digital formats, making it easier for passengers to prove their eligibility without hassle.
To ensure widespread compliance and awareness, Executive Director (Operations) A Appala Raju has directed officials to implement these guidelines rigorously across all depots and operational units. He has also emphasized the need for proactive awareness initiatives, such as:
- Conducting regular gate meetings with staff to reinforce the new protocols.
- Displaying clear instructions and guidelines on notice boards at terminals and stations.
- Educating both staff and the general public about the importance of respecting reserved seating for vulnerable passengers.
These measures represent a significant step forward in making public transport more inclusive and respectful for all citizens in Andhra Pradesh. By addressing long-standing complaints and enforcing strict rules, the APSRTC aims to create a safer and more dignified travel environment for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, ensuring their journeys are comfortable and hassle-free.
