Andhra Pradesh Government Launches Major Initiative to Build Animal Shelters Statewide
The Andhra Pradesh government has announced a comprehensive plan to establish dedicated animal shelters across all districts in the state. This strategic move aims to tackle the growing problem of stray and abandoned animals, which has raised significant concerns about animal welfare and public inconvenience in urban and rural areas alike.
Five Shelters Per District with MGNREGS Funding
Under this ambitious initiative, authorities will construct five animal shelters in each district, strategically located near constituency headquarters whenever possible. The funding for this project will come from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), demonstrating innovative use of existing government resources for animal welfare infrastructure.
Each shelter is projected to cost approximately Rs 10 lakh and will require a minimum of half an acre of land. These facilities have been specifically designed to accommodate 20 to 25 large animals comfortably, with additional land allocated for essential fodder cultivation. The shelters will also feature reliable drinking water provisions to ensure proper hydration for all resident animals.
Multi-Departmental Coordination for Implementation
Animal Husbandry Director Dr. T. Damodar Naidu explained the detailed implementation framework: "The revenue department has been assigned the crucial task of arranging suitable land for these shelters, while the rural development department will oversee all construction activities. Veterinary services will be managed by the animal husbandry department to ensure professional medical care for the animals."
Dr. Naidu further emphasized the community-oriented approach, noting that day-to-day management of the shelters will be entrusted to carefully selected self-help groups (SHGs). This arrangement ensures meaningful community participation in animal welfare while creating local employment opportunities.
Comprehensive Animal Care Facilities
The shelters represent a holistic approach to animal welfare, providing destitute animals with:
- Proper, secure accommodation
- Balanced nutrition through on-site fodder cultivation
- Professional veterinary care and medical attention
- Safe drinking water facilities
- Humane living conditions with adequate space
Strict Deadline Set by Chief Minister
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has issued clear directives to officials, mandating completion of all shelter construction projects by March 31, 2027. This firm deadline underscores the government's commitment to addressing animal welfare concerns systematically and efficiently across Andhra Pradesh.
The initiative represents a significant step forward in creating sustainable solutions for stray animal management while promoting community involvement in animal welfare activities. By leveraging existing government schemes and coordinating multiple departments, Andhra Pradesh aims to establish a model for humane animal management that other states might emulate.
