Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Prioritizes Six Junctions for Flyover Construction to Combat Traffic Congestion
In a significant move to alleviate traffic woes, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has identified six of the city's most congested junctions for priority flyover construction. This decision follows a comprehensive traffic movement survey conducted by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI-CSIR), which analyzed 25 junctions across Ahmedabad. The survey, commissioned by the AMC's road and building committee on January 24, 2025, aimed to pinpoint the most choked points in the urban landscape.
Top Priority Junctions Revealed by CRRI-CSIR Survey
The CRRI-CSIR survey, for which the AMC paid Rs 64.9 lakh, highlighted Memco Junction as the most congested location, topping the list of critical areas. Following closely are Victoria Garden Junction in Ellisbridge and Shyamal Junction in the Satellite area. The remaining three junctions earmarked for immediate attention include Indira Bridge/Airport Road T Junction, Delhi Darwaza Junction, and Bhakti Circle on the SP Ring Road in Ramol-Hathijan. These six sites, comprising one in the west and five in the east, have been designated as first-priority targets for flyover construction as part of a broader decade-long initiative.
The AMC's strategy involves a phased approach, beginning with these initial six locations and expanding to all 25 surveyed junctions over the next ten years. This plan stems from initial data gathered by the Ahmedabad city traffic police, which compiled a list of heavy-traffic spots before engaging CRRI-CSIR for a detailed analysis.
Expanded Priority Lists and Future Plans
Beyond the first-priority junctions, the CRRI-CSIR report outlines additional recommendations to further decongest Ahmedabad's roads. A second-priority list includes 12 junctions: Rabari Colony, Mansi Crossroads, Isanpur BRTS route, Shivranjani, Shahibaug Dafnala Sabarmati riverfront entry point, Amraiwadi Swastik crossroads, Odhav Ring Road, Shah Alam, Paldi, Kalindri Masjid, Jashodanagar Expressway, and Ramdevnagar. Furthermore, a third-priority list comprises seven more locations: Rakhial Junction, SG Highway-Sanand Crossroads, Danilimda Junction, Nehru Bridge Junction, Ram Rajya Nagar Junction, Chandkheda Junction, and Nehrunagar Junction.
In a parallel development, an AMC official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the corporation approved a proposal in December 2025 to conduct another traffic survey at 10 additional junctions along the SG Highway and SP Ring Road through CRRI. This upcoming report, currently in preparation, will assess whether flyover bridges or underpasses are feasible at each site, with recommendations for traffic diversions where infrastructure projects are not viable.
Historical Context and Current Infrastructure
This is not the first collaboration between the AMC and CRRI-CSIR. In 2011-12, the agency surveyed 34 junctions, leading to the construction of flyovers at more than a dozen locations, including IIMA, Dinesh Chambers, Income Tax, and Anjali Crossroads. Currently, flyover work is underway at Vadaj Junction and five other junctions, demonstrating ongoing efforts to enhance mobility.
Ahmedabad's existing infrastructure includes 101 flyovers and underpasses, consisting of:
- 11 river bridges
- 24 railway overbridges
- 26 railway underbridges
- 21 flyovers
- 3 minor bridges
- 11 box culverts over canals
- 5 foot-overbridges
The AMC's commitment to this extensive flyover program underscores a proactive approach to urban planning, aiming to transform Ahmedabad's traffic dynamics and improve daily commutes for residents over the coming decade.
