Special Transport and Polling Booth Arrangements for Wayanad Landslide Survivors

In a significant move to ensure electoral participation, special transport arrangements have been implemented for landslide survivors residing in temporary accommodations across Wayanad district. These measures aim to facilitate their access to polling booths at Chooralmala and Meppadi during the upcoming elections.

Relocated Polling Booth for Enhanced Voter Convenience

To address logistical challenges, a special polling booth has been established at the Government Higher Secondary School in Meppadi. This booth replaces the previous location at Crescent English Medium School in Vellarimala village, which was designated as booth number 203. According to the Vythiri assistant returning officer, the relocation was executed to provide greater convenience for voters. The new polling station will operate on the eastern side of the school building, ensuring a smoother voting process for the affected community.

Comprehensive Bus Services for Voter Transportation

District Collector and District Election Officer D R Meghasree outlined the transportation plan, which involves deploying eight Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses. These buses will run between 11:00 AM and 2:30 PM, shuttling voters to the polling stations and back. Approximately 700 individuals from the landslide-affected areas are expected to utilize this service.

  • Return Services at 2:00 PM: Buses will leave from Kaniyambetta, Kalpetta Old Bus Stand, Kappamkolli, Thinapuram, Meppadi town, and Nedumbala temple to transport voters back to their accommodations.

Rehabilitation Emerges as a Pivotal Election Issue

The rehabilitation of Wayanad landslide survivors has become a major point of contention in the election discourse, extending beyond the district to the state level. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has emphasized its proposed township at Elstone Estate while criticizing the United Democratic Front (UDF) for delays in housing projects. In response, the UDF has questioned the government's rehabilitation efforts, alleging that numerous affected families have been excluded from support programs.

This political debate underscores the urgency of addressing the needs of landslide survivors, with both parties vying to demonstrate their commitment to effective rehabilitation and voter welfare.
