Election Commission's Mobile Deposit Facility Brings Major Relief to Voters in Guwahati
The Election Commission (EC) has introduced a new mobile deposit facility outside polling booths in Guwahati, Assam, providing significant relief to electors. This innovative initiative aims to enhance voter convenience and streamline poll-day arrangements by allowing voters to safely deposit their mobile phones before entering the booth to cast their votes.
How the Mobile Deposit System Works
At polling stations, jute bags equipped with 10 pockets were hung on walls outside the booths. Voters deposited their phones into these bags and received a coupon in return, ensuring a secure and organized process. This system addresses a common inconvenience faced by voters who previously had to hand over their phones to relatives or friends, often finding no one available to hold them.
Voter and Official Feedback on the Initiative
Jonali Deka, a voter from the New Guwahati constituency, praised the facility, stating, "Earlier, we had to rely on others to hold our phones, which wasn't always possible. Mobile phones are now essential in daily life, and this facility solves that problem, making it easier to vote without worry." Tridip Gogoi, a Booth Level Officer (BLO) at Sankardev LP School in the same constituency, reported that polling concluded smoothly with good cooperation from voters, many of whom used and appreciated the mobile deposit arrangement.
EC's Commitment to Enhancing Voter Experience
During a press conference last month, Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel highlighted that this facility is part of several new initiatives by the EC to improve voter convenience. The guidelines for providing mobile deposit facilities are consistent with the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, ensuring legal compliance and operational efficiency.
This proactive measure reflects the EC's dedication to modernizing electoral processes and addressing practical challenges faced by voters, ultimately fostering higher participation and satisfaction in the democratic process.
