Baramati: A One-Sided Contest?
Among the most closely watched contests is Baramati in Maharashtra, a traditional stronghold of the Pawar family. The bypoll follows the death of senior leader Ajit Pawar, and his wife Sunetra Pawar is seen as the frontrunner in a largely one-sided contest. The election also carries constitutional importance, as her victory would secure her position in the state legislature within the mandated time frame after assuming office. NCP leaders are confident of a sweeping victory, with party workers predicting a record margin in the Pawar stronghold.
Rahuri: A Direct Political Fight
In contrast, Rahuri presents a more direct political contest, with multiple parties in the fray after the death of BJP MLA Shivajirao Kardile. BJP's Akshay Kardile, son of the deceased MLA, is taking on NCP (SP)'s Govind Mokate and other candidates, making the outcome less predictable.
Karnataka: Key Seats for Congress and BJP
In Karnataka, the Bagalkot and Davanagere South bypolls are politically significant for both the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP. Triggered by the deaths of senior Congress leaders HY Meti and Shamanur Shivashankarappa, these seats are expected to test the organisational strength and voter base of both parties in the state. Elaborate arrangements have been made for vote counting in Bagalkot, with 14 tables set up for EVM counting and separate arrangements for postal ballots. A total of 63 personnel have been deployed for the counting exercise.
Other Seats: Local Dynamics at Play
The Umreth seat in Gujarat, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Koridang in Nagaland are also witnessing electoral contests shaped by local dynamics, candidate profiles and party strategies. While some constituencies may see straightforward outcomes influenced by legacy or sympathy factors, others could produce competitive results reflecting shifting voter preferences.
Goa Bypoll Declared Null and Void
Notably, the bypoll in Goa's Ponda constituency will not take place after the Bombay High Court declared it null and void, citing provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The ruling, based on the clause that allows skipping by-elections when less than one year of the assembly term remains, has sparked a wider debate on democratic representation and the balance between legal provisions and voter rights.
Security and Preparations
Security has been tightened across sensitive locations, with deployment of central forces, local police and micro-observers to monitor proceedings. Polling teams have reached booths with EVMs and VVPATs, and mock polls were conducted before voting began to verify machine functionality. In Bagalkot, the security room was opened at 7am in the presence of election observers, candidates and their agents to ensure transparency. Candidates, election agents and counting agents have been instructed to report at the centre by 7am as per ECI guidelines.
As polling begins, voter turnout, ground mobilisation by parties, and local issues will play a key role in shaping the outcomes.
