AAP Workers Distribute Ration Kits in Poll-Bound Areas
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified its outreach in poll-bound areas of Jalandhar by distributing ration kits to underprivileged families. This move comes as the state gears up for upcoming by-elections, drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties who accuse the ruling party of violating the model code of conduct.
According to party sources, the ration distribution drive aims to provide relief to economically weaker sections during the ongoing pandemic. Each kit contains essential items such as wheat flour, rice, pulses, cooking oil, and spices. AAP workers have been going door-to-door in slums and low-income neighborhoods, ensuring that the aid reaches those in need.
However, opposition parties, including the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal, have cried foul, alleging that the distribution is a thinly veiled attempt to influence voters. They have urged the Election Commission to investigate and take strict action against AAP for flouting election guidelines. The model code of conduct, in effect since the announcement of by-polls, prohibits any activity that may be construed as bribery or inducement to voters.
In response, AAP leaders defended the initiative, stating that it is a purely humanitarian effort and not linked to elections. They pointed out that the party has been running similar food drives across the state long before the election schedule was announced. Senior party functionaries argued that denying essential supplies to the poor during a health crisis would be inhuman, and they vowed to continue the distribution despite opposition threats.
Local residents have expressed mixed reactions. Some beneficiaries praised the party for its timely help, while others questioned the timing of the distribution. Political analysts note that such welfare measures often become contentious during election periods, with parties leveraging them for electoral gains. The Election Commission is yet to issue a formal response to the complaints.
As the by-poll date approaches, the ration kit distribution has become a flashpoint in Jalandhar's political landscape. While AAP hopes to consolidate its support base among the poor, opposition parties are using the issue to paint the ruling party as unethical. The coming days will likely see further escalation as both sides gear up for a heated electoral battle.
