Xi Jinping Greets India on Republic Day, Calls It 'Good Neighbour'

Chinese President Xi Jinping Extends Warm Republic Day Greetings to India

On the occasion of India's 77th Republic Day, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed heartfelt congratulations to President Droupadi Murmu, emphasizing the significance of the bilateral relationship between the two Asian giants. In his message, Xi described China and India as "good neighbours, friends and partners," underscoring a diplomatic tone aimed at fostering cooperation.

Xi's Emphasis on Improving China-India Relations

According to reports from the official Xinhua news agency, President Xi highlighted that over the past year, China-India relations have continued to improve and develop. He asserted that these ties hold "great significance for maintaining and promoting world peace and prosperity." Xi reiterated China's longstanding belief that being good neighbours, friends, and partners is the optimal path for both nations.

In a poetic reference, Xi likened the relationship to "the dragon and the elephant dancing together," symbolizing harmony and mutual progress. He expressed hope that both sides would expand exchanges, enhance cooperation, and address each other's concerns to promote healthy and stable relations.

Background: Border Disputes and Recent Thaw

The nuclear-armed neighbours share a 3,800 km border that has been poorly demarcated and disputed since the 1950s. Ties were severely strained following a deadly clash in 2020, which resulted in the loss of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. In the aftermath, the Himalayan border region witnessed heavy militarization by both sides.

However, recent years have seen a gradual thaw in relations. Both countries initiated a series of high-level bilateral visits last year, paving the way for improved diplomatic engagement. Notably, direct flights resumed in 2025, and trade and investment flows have increased, partly in response to the combative foreign policy of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Republic Day Celebrations in India

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day with official ceremonies led by President Droupadi Murmu, who unfurled the tricolour at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. The event preceded the ceremonial Republic Day parade, marking a day of national pride and reflection.

Xi's greetings come at a time when both nations are navigating complex geopolitical landscapes, balancing historical tensions with aspirations for regional stability and economic collaboration.
