US Ambassador Sergio Gor Highlights Defence as Cornerstone of India-US Strategic Partnership

In a significant statement, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has identified defence and security cooperation as the most strategically vital component of the bilateral relationship between India and the United States. He underscored the deepening defence ties, which are being reinforced through a new 10-year framework, enhanced defence industrial cooperation, science and technology collaboration, and operational coordination.

Defence Cooperation: A Bright Spot in Bilateral Ties

In an interview with the US embassy publication, Span magazine, Ambassador Gor elaborated on the importance of defence collaboration. "India is a Major Defence Partner, and defence cooperation is one of the brightest spots in our bilateral relationship," he stated. He highlighted how both nations strengthen military interoperability through joint exercises such as Malabar, Tiger Triumph, and Cope India, which are critical for enhancing operational readiness and strategic alignment.

Gor also emphasized the role of the Quad—a strategic partnership involving India, the US, Japan, and Australia—in keeping security interests robust and aligned. "Both of our nations are also part of the Quad, a strategic partnership that keeps our security interests robust and aligned," he said. He predicted a natural strengthening of defence ties if core aspects like diplomacy, defence exercises, and military sales are maintained, ensuring continued cooperation.

Economic and Trade Expansion: Transformative Potential

Beyond defence, Ambassador Gor pointed to economic investment and trade expansion as areas with equally transformative potential. He noted that President Donald Trump's goal is to facilitate bilateral trade in a way that creates unprecedented opportunities for American businesses and workers. "India's growing economy and massive infrastructure needs align perfectly with American expertise in energy, aviation, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure," Gor explained. He described this synergy as a win-win situation that benefits both nations while strengthening the economic foundation of their long-term strategic partnership.

AI Cooperation and Global Governance

On the topic of artificial intelligence (AI), Gor described it as a nuanced and evolving issue requiring open communication between India and the US. "The fact of the matter is that AI is here now, in our daily lives. So, how do we use it for our benefit?" he questioned. He opposed the idea of a global governance board based out of the UN determining AI usage, instead advocating for bilateral cooperation. His vision is to transform the US-India relationship into the defining strategic partnership of the 21st century, delivering tangible benefits for both countries.

Pax Silica and Critical Mineral Partnerships

Ambassador Gor also discussed Pax Silica, an initiative that India is a signatory to, which focuses on aligning US-India economic and national security interests. This involves partnerships on critical mineral processing capacity and AI infrastructure investments. "This combination of political and financial commitments ensures our supply chains are not dominated by one source, which drastically reduces risk," he said, highlighting efforts to diversify and secure supply chains in key sectors.

Overall, Gor's remarks underscore a comprehensive approach to India-US relations, with defence at its core, supported by economic collaboration and technological innovation, aiming to build a resilient and prosperous partnership for the future.
