Trump Voices Discontent with Starmer Over Energy and NATO
US President Donald Trump on Monday expressed strong criticism of former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, focusing on energy policy and NATO cooperation. Speaking at a signing ceremony for executive orders on quantum technology in the White House Oval Office, Trump stated he had raised concerns directly with Starmer about missed opportunities in the energy sector, particularly regarding North Sea oil drilling. Trump's remarks came after Starmer announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party, amid a leadership challenge from Labour legislator Andy Burnham.
Trump's Specific Complaints on Energy
Trump highlighted what he termed a flawed approach to energy development in the UK. He said: "I was critical of him only because, as I told him, 'You're really messing up energy. You have windmills all over the place. In the meantime, you have the North Sea oil, and they won't let anybody drill.'" Trump further claimed that parts of the North Sea held significant untapped potential but were being left unexploited due to environmental concerns. "The UK has a much better portion of the North Sea. They don't want to do it for environmental purposes," he added.
NATO-Related Strains
Trump also criticized Starmer's approach to NATO, alleging that certain decisions had strained coordination with the United States. According to Trump, Starmer said: "We can't use the island for a couple of weeks. Then he said, 'Well, but ultimately I gave it to you.'" Trump concluded: "No, that was a bad move. That hurt him badly, but I wish him well." The US President further noted that the UK faces broader domestic challenges, stating: "But he's got two problems. Energy and immigration. And crime."
Starmer's Resignation and Leadership Transition
Starmer announced his resignation as Labour Party leader on Monday, citing the need to prioritize the country. In a statement, he said: "Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party." He outlined a leadership election timetable, with nominations opening on July 9, and confirmed he would remain as prime minister until the process was completed to ensure an orderly handover of power. The National Executive Committee of the Labour Party will set the schedule, with a new leader expected before Parliament returns in September.
Trump's Earlier Social Media Post
Before Starmer's resignation, Trump had posted on Truth Social, predicting Starmer would step down for "failing badly" on immigration and energy policy. Trump wrote: "Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects - IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!"
