Sikh Organisations Push for Reopening of Attari-Wagah Trade Route with Pakistan
In a significant development, Sikh organisations have intensified their demand for the reopening of the border with Pakistan to resume trade activities through the Wagah-Attari crossing. The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and the Dal Khalsa have jointly announced plans to hold a rally at Attari on March 28, aiming to pressure authorities into restoring cross-border trade.
Announcement by Former MP Simranjit Singh Mann
Former Member of Parliament Simranjit Singh Mann made this announcement during a press conference held in Amritsar on Friday. He was accompanied by fellow leaders Emaan Singh Mann and Kanwar Pal Singh. Mann emphasized that facilitating free trade and unrestricted movement of people between India and Pakistan is crucial for regional prosperity.
Simranjit Singh Mann stated, "Reopening the Attari-Wagah border would significantly boost economic growth, provide Punjab's farmers and traders with better access to markets in the neighbouring country, and help alleviate the ongoing economic distress in our state." He framed this demand within a broader political context, advocating for measures that enhance bilateral relations.
Broader Implications for Regional Peace and Economy
Emaan Singh Mann highlighted the strategic importance of this move in the current geopolitical climate. He referenced the Indian Army's stance that Operation Sindoor is not concluded but merely paused, adding, "In this scenario, opening the Attari-Wagah border becomes even more critical to prevent further escalation and to foster lasting peace in the region."
Kanwar Pal Singh pointed out the historical challenges, noting that military stand-offs and skirmishes between India and Pakistan have led to frequent closures and restrictions at the border over the years. This has disrupted not only trade but also pilgrim visits to historic gurdwaras located across the Radcliffe Line.
He further explained, "Even the Kartarpur Corridor has been non-functional since the limited conflict between India and Pakistan last year, underscoring the urgent need to normalize border operations for both economic and cultural exchanges."
Upcoming Rally and Future Prospects
The planned rally at Attari on March 28 is expected to draw significant attention from stakeholders, including local communities, traders, and political observers. Sikh organisations aim to use this platform to amplify their call for resuming trade, which they believe will not only benefit Punjab's economy but also contribute to stabilizing Indo-Pak relations.
As discussions continue, the demand to reopen the Attari-Wagah trade route remains a focal point in efforts to address economic hardships and promote cross-border cooperation in South Asia.
