Canadian Police Find No Evidence of Indian Link to Criminal Threats
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has officially declared that its ongoing criminal investigations have uncovered no evidence connecting threats or illegal activities within Canada to the Indian government. This significant announcement comes as diplomatic relations between the two nations show signs of improvement following a period of heightened tension.
RCMP Commissioner Clarifies Investigation Findings
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme, in a recent interview with CTV reported by ANI, explicitly stated that current investigations do not establish any link between alleged intimidation or harassment cases and foreign entities, specifically India. "We're not seeing any connection right now with any foreign entity, based on the criminal information, the investigation that we have presently," Duheme emphasized.
He further elaborated, "What we have in our holdings is we have people that are intimidating people, harassing people, but connecting the dots to a foreign entity, We don't have that." This clarification addresses concerns that have persisted within certain communities, particularly following the return of Indian diplomats to Canada.
Context of Diplomatic Tensions
The RCMP's statement arrives months after a major diplomatic dispute erupted between India and Canada. The controversy was ignited when former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly alleged that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi has consistently and strongly denied these accusations, labeling them as baseless.
Commissioner Duheme noted that earlier statements made in 2024 were based on the evidence available at that specific time. However, he clarified that the current findings from ongoing investigations do not indicate any foreign involvement. "Well, what I quoted in 2024 was based on the criminal investigation that we had at the time... what we're seeing right now in transnational repression... the dots don't always connect to a foreign entity," he explained.
Addressing Specific Criminal Concerns
Regarding criminal activities associated with the Bishnoi gang, Duheme provided important context. He cautioned that not all extortion cases can be automatically attributed to this organized crime group, and some individuals may be misusing the gang's name for their own purposes. Crucially, he affirmed that there is no confirmed link between such criminal activities and the Government of India.
Emphasis on Public Cooperation and Diplomatic Developments
The RCMP chief stressed the critical importance of public cooperation in addressing these types of crimes. "We work closely with law enforcement from across the country to make sure that it's a coordinated approach... if they see something, say something," Duheme urged, highlighting the collaborative nature of modern law enforcement efforts.
This development follows closely after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent visit to India, which signaled concerted efforts by both governments to stabilize and normalize bilateral relations. The diplomatic engagement represents a positive step forward after tensions escalated significantly throughout 2023, affecting various aspects of the India-Canada relationship.
The RCMP's clear statement serves to provide factual clarity amid previous allegations and speculation, while also reflecting the current state of criminal investigations within Canada's borders. As both nations continue to work on rebuilding trust and cooperation, this law enforcement assessment contributes to a more informed understanding of the actual security situation, separate from political narratives that have dominated recent discourse.
