Indian Railways Extends Boarding Point Change Deadline to 30 Minutes Before Departure
In a significant policy revision aimed at enhancing passenger convenience, Indian Railways has officially extended the deadline for passengers to modify their boarding point. The new provision, which came into effect on April 1, 2026, now allows travelers to make changes up to the preparation of the second and final reservation chart. This typically occurs approximately 30 minutes before the scheduled departure of a train, marking a substantial shift from the previous stringent requirements.
Key Changes in the Revised Provision
The revised rule replaces the earlier regulation that mandated passengers to submit boarding point change requests at least 24 hours in advance. Previously, such modifications had to be completed before the preparation of the first reservation chart. Under the new system, the flexibility has been significantly increased, providing last-minute options for confirmed and RAC ticket holders.
According to an official press release issued by Southern Railway, headquartered in Chennai, this adjustment follows a recent shift in the chart preparation timelines. The first reservation chart is now generally prepared eight to 10 hours before departure, often on the previous night. This contrasts with the earlier practice where it was prepared just four hours prior to the train's scheduled departure time.
Eligibility and Restrictions for Boarding Point Changes
Eligibility Criteria:
- The facility is exclusively available for passengers holding confirmed or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets.
- Boarding point changes are strictly not permitted for waitlisted tickets, ensuring that only passengers with secured berths can utilize this service.
Operational Restrictions:
- Passengers are allowed to modify their boarding station only once per ticket.
- Once the boarding point has been updated in the system, travelers must board the train from the revised station. No further changes or reversals are permitted after this update.
Impact on Passenger Experience and Operational Efficiency
This policy revision is expected to greatly benefit passengers who encounter last-minute changes in their travel plans. By allowing modifications up to 30 minutes before departure, Indian Railways is addressing a common pain point for travelers, reducing the stress associated with rigid scheduling. The extended deadline aligns with modern travel needs, where flexibility is increasingly valued.
From an operational perspective, the shift in chart preparation timelines to eight to 10 hours before departure facilitates better planning and resource allocation for railway authorities. This change not only streamlines internal processes but also enhances the overall efficiency of train operations, contributing to a smoother travel experience for all passengers.
The implementation of this new rule underscores Indian Railways' commitment to adapting its services to meet evolving passenger demands while maintaining operational integrity. As travel patterns continue to evolve, such proactive measures are crucial for sustaining high levels of customer satisfaction and service reliability.
