PM Modi Engages in High-Level Diplomatic Talks on West Asia Conflict
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively engaging in diplomatic conversations with several world leaders regarding the ongoing and escalating conflict in the West Asia region. This high-level outreach underscores India's commitment to fostering dialogue and de-escalation amidst growing regional tensions.
India's Diplomatic Outreach for Regional Stability
During an inter-ministerial briefing on Monday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal detailed India's sustained diplomatic efforts. "As you are aware, the Prime Minister has been speaking to several world leaders on the ongoing conflict in the West Asia region," Jaiswal stated. These discussions are strategically focused on reducing hostilities that have intensified significantly since late February, threatening to destabilize the entire Middle East.
A key highlight of this diplomatic push was a direct conversation between Prime Minister Modi and the President of Iran over the weekend. Jaiswal noted, "On Saturday, as you are aware, he had spoken to the President of Iran. On the occasion, he also had the opportunity to convey Eid and Nowruz greetings." This exchange occurred during the festive period, with PM Modi expressing a hopeful sentiment for peace and prosperity in the region.
Condemnation of Attacks and Economic Security Concerns
Prime Minister Modi utilized the dialogue to voice India's firm condemnation of recent military actions targeting non-combatant infrastructure. "The Prime Minister condemned the attacks on critical infrastructure in the region, which threatened regional stability and disrupt global supply chains," Jaiswal elaborated. This statement directly references a series of concerning drone and missile strikes that have hit energy facilities across the Persian Gulf, creating significant volatility.
The MEA spokesperson further emphasized the critical economic dimensions of the crisis, particularly the risks to maritime trade. "The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring that shipping lanes remain open and secure," Jaiswal added. This focus highlights the global apprehension over the potential closure of vital chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, which could severely disrupt international energy supplies and trade flows.
Welfare of Indian Diaspora and Appreciation for Iran
Beyond geopolitical and economic stability, the safety of the substantial Indian community residing in West Asia remains a paramount concern for the Indian government. In his discussions, PM Modi acknowledged Iran's role in this regard. Jaiswal remarked that the Prime Minister "also appreciated Iran's continued support for the safety, security and welfare of Indian nationals in Iran."
The conflict, involving key players like Iran, Israel, and the United States, has reached a critical phase after weeks of retaliatory strikes. The international community is on high alert, fearing the conflict could escalate into a full-scale regional war. Such an event would have catastrophic consequences for global fuel security and the long-term stability of West Asia, making India's diplomatic interventions all the more crucial.
