Diplomatic Outreach After Ras Laffan Tragedy
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Wednesday confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a telephone call from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, following a devastating accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City. The blast on Sunday night killed 12 Indian nationals and injured 66 others, including Indians.
Jaiswal stated, "We had a tragic accident in Qatar. We lost 12 Indian lives. Yesterday, the Prime Minister received a telephone call from His Highness the Emir of Qatar, who offered condolences on the loss of lives of Indian nationals in this tragic accident in the industrial city."
Explosion at LNG Facility
The incident occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility operated by QatarEnergy LNG. A total of 13 people were killed, with Indians comprising the majority of fatalities. The explosion also left 66 injured, many of whom were Indian workers. Qatari authorities confirmed that all injured individuals are in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical treatment.
PM Modi expressed gratitude for the Emir's outreach, posting on X: "I thank His Highness the Amir of Qatar for his phone call and condolences on the loss of lives of Indian nationals in the tragic accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar."
Shared Grief and Solidarity
According to official sources, both leaders shared grief over the loss of lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. Jaiswal elaborated, "Both leaders shared grief over the loss of lives and wished a speedy recovery for those who are injured. India and Qatar stand in solidarity with each other and remain committed to the well-being of Indian nationals in Qatar."
PM Modi reaffirmed the close ties between the two nations, stating, "India and Qatar remain steadfast in their commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens and stand in solidarity with each other."
Indian Embassy Response
The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that relief measures are actively underway. Citing Qatari authorities, the mission said all injured are in stable condition and receiving medical care. The MEA also released a press statement detailing the telephone conversation between the two leaders.
Jaiswal concluded, "We have also put out a press release on this telephone call that happened between His Highness the Emir of Qatar and the Prime Minister."
