Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday for a three-day official visit aimed at bolstering bilateral ties. He was accorded a grand welcome at the Seychelles International Airport by President Wavel Ramkalawan and a high-level delegation.
Ceremonial Guard of Honour
Upon arrival, PM Modi received a ceremonial Guard of Honour, reflecting the warm relations between the two nations. The Indian diaspora also turned out in large numbers, waving Indian flags and chanting slogans to greet the prime minister.
In a post on X, Modi expressed gratitude, saying, "Here are some glimpses from the warm welcome at the airport in Seychelles. Thankful to the Indian diaspora for the affection." The post included a video of the reception.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
During his visit, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with President Ramkalawan on enhancing cooperation in areas such as maritime security, trade, and development projects. Seychelles is a key partner in India's 'Sagar' vision for the Indian Ocean region.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit underscores India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy and its focus on the Indian Ocean region. The two leaders are expected to sign several agreements to deepen ties.
Cultural and Community Events
The prime minister will also interact with the Indian community in Seychelles and participate in cultural events. This is Modi's first visit to the island nation since 2015, highlighting the growing strategic partnership.
Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan welcomed Modi, stating, "We are honoured to host Prime Minister Modi. This visit marks a new chapter in our friendship and cooperation." The visit is expected to further cement the close ties between India and Seychelles.
