Three New Railway Lines to Transform Connectivity Near Bangladesh Border in Northern Bengal

The Ministry of Railways has given its approval for three new railway line projects in northern Bengal, a move set to significantly strengthen connectivity near the India-Bangladesh border. This initiative, part of the 'Bikoshito Bangla' push, aims to provide alternative routes and enhance mobility in this densely populated region.

Approved Projects and Their Details

The Eastern Railway confirmed in a statement that the approved projects include:

  • Raiganj–Dalkhola line: Spanning 43.43 kilometres with an estimated cost of Rs 291.53 crore, this line will feature five stations: Raiganj, Bilashpur Halt, Tunidighi, Karandighi, and Dalkhola. It aims to create a more efficient transit route, reducing travel time and boosting local trade. The project involves constructing 13 major bridges, six road-over bridges, 97 minor bridges, and 32 road-under bridges.
  • Gazole–Itahar line: This 27.20-kilometre line, estimated at Rs 85.59 crore, will include three stations: Gazole, Bangar Halt, and Itahar. It is designed to enhance the integrated gauge conversion network in northern West Bengal, facilitating smoother freight and passenger movement toward the Northeast. Construction will involve 12 major and 37 minor bridges, including road-under-bridges.
  • Raiganj–Itahar line: Covering 22.16 kilometres at an estimated cost of Rs 129.34 crore, this line will have four stations: Raiganj, Rupahar Halt, Durgapur, and Itahar. It includes the construction of six major bridges and 42 minor bridges, such as road underpasses, and is expected to improve the gauge conversion network for better rail movement toward the Northeast.

Impact on Connectivity and Socio-Economic Growth

According to railway officials, these new lines will provide alternative routes between Malda and Aluabari, significantly improving mobility in northern Bengal. The enhanced connectivity is anticipated to address strategic, logistical, and public utility needs while opening new avenues for development. This is particularly beneficial for economically weaker communities in the region.

The Railways emphasized that the 'Bikoshito Bangla' initiative will not only improve connectivity and mobility but also drive socio-economic growth. By enhancing rail activity toward the adjacent international border with Bangladesh, these projects are poised to transform trade and transportation dynamics in border-adjacent areas.

Overall, the approval of these three railway lines marks a crucial step in upgrading rail infrastructure in North Bengal, promising long-term benefits for regional development and cross-border interactions.
