In a significant strategic move, Indian Railways has announced plans to construct a new 200-kilometer railway track from Chalsa in Jalpaiguri to Doklam, located on the Indo-China border. This decision comes as a response to China's ongoing infrastructural developments across the border, aiming to bolster India's connectivity and defense capabilities in the region.
Initial Phase and Funding Approval
For the first phase of this ambitious project, the railways have sanctioned Rs 2.92 crore to conduct a final location survey (FLS). This survey will cover a 20-kilometer stretch from Chalsa to Naxal, a small hamlet that lies on the route to Bindu. Bindu is recognized as the last Indian village in Kalimpong, situated just ahead of Bhutan, highlighting the track's strategic positioning near international boundaries.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently informed Jalpaiguri MP Jayanta Roy about the sanctioning of the FLS through a formal letter. This communication underscores the government's commitment to advancing this critical infrastructure project, which is set to enhance regional connectivity and security.

The new railway track will commence from Chalsa in Jalpaiguri and traverse through diverse terrains, including the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and Sibchu.
