Mother Breaks Silence on Walmart Oven Death, Dissatisfied with Investigation

Eighteen months after a horrific accident shook an Indian-origin family in Canada, Mandip Kaur, the mother of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur who was charred to death inside a Walmart oven, has broken her silence. She expressed deep dissatisfaction with the official probe into her daughter's tragic demise.

Official Findings and Family's Anguish

Soon after the tragedy, the Halifax Police ruled out anything suspicious. More recently, the Nova Scotia Department of Labour announced that they found no safety violations in Gursimran's death. This finding prompted Mandip, who also worked at the same Walmart, to speak out and recount the horror. Speaking to DailyMail, Mandip revealed she could not find any remains of her daughter. "Her body was not there. I could not see her," Mandip said. She still maintains she does not know what happened that fateful night.

The Night of the Tragedy

On the night of October 19, 2024, both mother and daughter were on shift. Mandip was trying to contact her daughter but could not reach her via text or phone. Initially, she assumed Gursimran was either with a customer or on break. However, anxiety grew after two managers informed her they had not seen Gursimran for a while. When they arrived in the bakery, one manager noticed a "black-brown liquid resembling tar" leaking from the back of the oven. This fluid turned out to be coming from Gursimran's body, which lay next to the baking racks. Mandip collapsed and was taken away as emergency responders arrived.

Unanswered Questions and Family's Certainty

Mandip stated that investigators did not explain how Gursimran ended up inside the oven or why she could not get out. The mother does not know how long her daughter was inside the oven or whether she screamed for help. "They don't know. They don't have any proof. No solid results," she lamented. Mandip is certain that her daughter did not end her own life. She described Gursimran as a happy girl who was planning to study medicine, with a package even delivered days after her death.

Aftermath and Changes

After a service at their local gurdwara, the family returned to India, where Gursimran's ashes were scattered. The Walmart location was closed for four months following the fatality, during which time the bakery was renovated and moved to another section of the store. Notably, the new ovens are not walk-ins, a change that may reflect safety considerations.

This heartbreaking case continues to raise questions about workplace safety and investigative transparency, leaving a family in grief without clear answers.
