PM Modi and Iranian President Discuss Brics Role in Halting Aggressions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday, marking their second dialogue since tensions escalated on February 28. During the exchange, Tehran called upon the Brics grouping, currently chaired by India, to play an independent role in "halting aggressions" against Iran amid the intensifying Middle East crisis.

Iran's Call for Brics Intervention

In a statement released by the Iranian embassy in India, President Pezeshkian emphasized the need for Brics to safeguard regional and international peace and stability. He highlighted the ongoing military aggressions by the United States and Israel, asserting that Iran did not initiate the conflict. The president detailed unlawful attacks, including strikes during nuclear negotiations that resulted in casualties among senior leaders and civilians, such as the tragic martyrdom of 168 schoolchildren in Minab.

Pezeshkian rejected claims that US military actions aimed to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, citing the late Supreme Leader's firm opposition to such weapons and issued directives against their development. He also dismissed allegations of Iran being a source of regional instability, accusing Israel of carrying out attacks across multiple countries under the guise of security.

PM Modi's Response and Proposals

Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions, strongly condemning attacks on energy infrastructure that pose risks to global food and energy security. He reiterated that war serves no one's interest and urged all parties to move swiftly towards dialogue and peace. Modi proposed the creation of a regional security framework involving West Asian countries to maintain stability through cooperation without external interference.

Additionally, Modi stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and ensuring the security of key shipping lanes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, critical for global trade and energy supplies. He appreciated Iran's support for the safety of Indian nationals in the country.

Background and Diplomatic Efforts

The conversation occurred amid reports of joint US-Israel strikes on Iran's Natanz uranium enrichment facility, with no immediate signs of radioactive leakage. India has intensified diplomatic engagement with Iran to ensure uninterrupted energy supplies and secure shipping routes, prioritizing dialogue over military involvement in the region. This aligns with Modi's earlier statements on X, where he condemned attacks on critical infrastructure and emphasized the need for open shipping lanes.
