Kerala and Mahe Conduct Intensive Coastal Security Exercise 'Sagar Kavach'
Kochi witnessed a significant two-day coastal security drill, named 'Sagar Kavach', conducted on Thursday and Friday across Kerala and the Union Territory of Mahe. This comprehensive exercise was designed to rigorously evaluate the readiness of all security agencies in countering asymmetric threats originating from the sea.
Multi-Agency Deployment and Coordination
During the exercise, a formidable array of maritime assets was mobilized along the Kerala coastline. This included Indian Naval Ships, Coast Guard surface vessels, and patrol boats operated by the coastal police, customs, marine enforcement wing, and Cochin port authorities. The entire operation was meticulously coordinated from the joint operations centre in Kochi, which serves as the nodal hub for all coastal security operations and drills in the region.
Extensive aerial surveillance was a key component of the exercise, with air assets from both the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard conducting thorough patrols to monitor the coastal areas. This aerial support enhanced the overall effectiveness of the security measures being tested.
Leadership and Strategic Objectives
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of Vice-Admiral Sameer Saxena, the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of the Southern Naval Command, who also holds the position of Commander in Chief for Coastal Defence (South). According to an official statement, the primary focus areas of 'Sagar Kavach' included the necessity of augmenting multi-layered security at sea, validating the security architecture of harbours and vital installations, and testing technology-driven surveillance mechanisms to effectively counter potential threats.
The exercise aimed to strengthen the coastal security construct by addressing these critical aspects, ensuring a robust defence against maritime incursions.
Collaborative Efforts and Community Involvement
Coastal security is recognized as a collective responsibility, and the exercise emphasized collaboration and coordination among all stakeholders. A notable highlight was the emphasis on the role of the fishing community, which is considered the 'Eyes and Ears' for security agencies.
