Jaishankar conducted separate telephonic discussions with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, focusing on the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia amidst ongoing regional conflicts. These conversations underscore India's proactive diplomatic engagement with key Gulf partners during a period of heightened tensions.
Diplomatic Outreach to Saudi Arabia and UAE
In a social media post, Jaishankar revealed that he spoke late Saturday night with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to deliberate on the latest developments related to the crisis. "Had a telecon last night with FM Faisal bin Farhan of Saudi Arabia. Discussed ongoing developments related to the conflict in West Asia," he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the dialogue.
Similarly, Jaishankar engaged with the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, exchanging comprehensive views on various aspects of the regional situation. This outreach occurs as New Delhi maintains close diplomatic ties with Gulf nations amid escalating conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, which have raised significant security concerns across the region and posed risks to energy supplies and maritime traffic.
Strategic Visit to Brussels for EU Consultations
Following these discussions, Jaishankar has embarked on a two-day visit to Brussels from March 15 to 16, where he will participate in the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council meeting. The visit, at the invitation of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, aims to strengthen bilateral and multilateral engagements.
During his stay, Jaishankar is scheduled to interact with foreign ministers from all 27 EU member states and hold bilateral talks with EU leadership, as well as with his Belgian counterpart and other European partners. This visit builds upon the momentum from the 16th India-EU Summit earlier this year, where negotiations on a landmark free trade agreement were concluded, reaffirming commitments to deepen the strategic partnership.

The free trade pact is anticipated to significantly expand market access and bolster economic ties between India and the EU, with bilateral trade currently exceeding €120 billion annually, making the bloc India's largest trading partner.
