Jaishankar at G7 Highlights Freedom of Navigation Amid Iranian Strait Blockade
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday underscored the critical importance of freedom of navigation for global economic security during a meeting of the G7 foreign ministers in France. This emphasis comes amid an Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint for international trade.
Addressing Global South Concerns and Regional Conflicts
In the session on global governance, Jaishankar raised concerns from the Global South regarding energy challenges, fertilizer supplies, and food security. He stated on social media platform X that the uncertainties arising from the conflict in West Asia strengthen the case for more resilient trade corridors and supply chains.

Advocating for International Reforms and Connectivity
Jaishankar also highlighted the urgency of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, streamlining peacekeeping operations, and strengthening humanitarian supply chains. He shared views on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), appreciating the "wide support and enthusiasm" to realize this important connectivity initiative.
He noted that India's Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the European Union, EFTA members, and the United Kingdom have enhanced the utility of IMEC, promoting economic integration.
Discussions on Cross-Cutting Threats and Bilateral Meetings
In a session on cross-cutting threats and sovereignty, Jaishankar emphasized freedom of navigation and spoke about the threat of narco-terror linkages. On the margins of the G7 meeting, he held bilateral talks with several counterparts.
- He met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing their discussions as "useful" talks.
- Jaishankar also met his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, following up on outcomes from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to India earlier this month.
These engagements reflect India's active diplomatic role in addressing global economic and security challenges, particularly in the context of escalating tensions in the Middle East affecting maritime routes and international trade.
