Indian Diaspora Key to India's 2047 Vision, Says Indiaspora Report

Indiaspora Report Highlights Indian Diaspora as Crucial Partner in India's 2047 Development Journey

Indiaspora, a prominent nonprofit organization representing global Indian leaders across various sectors, unveiled its comprehensive report titled 'India and its Diaspora: Partners in Progress' on Monday. This publication delves into the expanding influence of the Indian diaspora in shaping India's future trajectory through significant contributions in business, innovation, philanthropy, and the arts.

The Global Scale and Economic Power of the Indian Diaspora

With over 35 million individuals of Indian heritage residing in more than 200 countries and boasting an estimated annual income of $730 billion, the Indian diaspora stands as the largest and one of the most influential communities worldwide. The Indiaspora report emphasizes that this community is evolving beyond its traditional role as a source of remittances into a dynamic force of capital, capability, and credibility, actively accelerating India's rise toward its India@100 vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

From Remittances to Multifaceted Engagement

Sanjeev Joshipura, executive director of Indiaspora, highlighted the timing of the report's release during the Indiaspora Forum in Bengaluru, stating, "We think it is important to connect the diaspora with India. We see the inflection points of the diaspora and India." The report reveals that while remittances once defined the diaspora's connection to India, current engagement is far more profound. Diaspora leaders are now contributing through investment, knowledge sharing, technology partnerships, and global networks, thereby strengthening India's economic growth, innovation ecosystem, and international standing.

Optimism and Vision for India's Future

The report captures a strong sense of optimism and desire among the diaspora to engage with India. Survey respondents expressed confidence in their ability to contribute to India's future, envisioning a nation that by 2047 ranks among the world's leading economies, drives global innovation, reduces inequality, and ensures a high quality of life for its citizens.

Overcoming Barriers for Enhanced Collaboration

However, the report also identifies structural barriers and inefficiencies that hinder deeper diaspora engagement. Drawing insights from over 200 leaders across 24 countries, it outlines practical recommendations for both Indian policymakers and diaspora leaders to foster greater collaboration and long-term impact. Joshipura noted, "One section of the report is dedicated to recommendations on what India can do to harness diaspora for its potential towards a developed India in 2047." Key suggestions include strengthening the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card by granting more responsibilities and rights, and initiating dialogue on dual citizenship, a topic of significant interest to many diaspora members despite its complexities.

Building on Previous Studies and Expanding Scope

The 'Partners in Progress' report builds upon earlier studies documenting the Indian diaspora's contributions, offering a more comprehensive focus on actionable strategies to enhance engagement across economic, cultural, social, and philanthropic domains. It also follows Indiaspora's previous Impact reports produced with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), such as Small Community, Big Contributions (2024), which highlighted the outsized impact of Indian Americans, and a 2025 report on the Indian community in the UAE.

Addressing Friction Points and Future Initiatives

Joshipura mentioned ongoing discussions with government officials in New Delhi to implement the report's recommendations, acknowledging that while improvements have been made, "friction is still quite high to get things done" in areas like business collaboration, philanthropy, and the arts. Indiaspora is also planning future reports on other countries with active Indian diaspora populations, such as the United Kingdom, to further explore and leverage this global network for India's development goals.
