India Extends Humanitarian Support to Afghanistan Following Natural Disasters
The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Sunday that India has dispatched critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief materials to Afghanistan, which is currently grappling with severe natural calamities. The aid comes as the country faces overlapping crises of earthquakes and devastating floods that have taken a heavy toll on vulnerable communities.
Official Statement from Ministry of External Affairs
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on social media platform X: "At this time of hardship being faced by Afghan people due to recent floods and earthquake, India delivers HADR materials, including kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, sleeping bags, and more."
He further emphasized India's commitment to supporting Afghanistan during this challenging period, adding: "India stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and remains committed to extending humanitarian assistance and support during this challenging time."
Severe Natural Disasters Wreak Havoc in Afghanistan
Afghanistan is currently experiencing a series of devastating natural disasters that have compounded existing humanitarian challenges:
- A powerful 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least a dozen people and destroying homes across multiple provinces
- Days of heavy rainfall have triggered widespread flooding in several regions, worsening already fragile living conditions
- Many affected individuals are recently returned refugees from Iran and Pakistan who often live in temporary shelters highly exposed to such disasters
Geographical Vulnerabilities and Infrastructure Challenges
The country's location in a seismically active zone, combined with limited resilient infrastructure, makes it particularly vulnerable to recurring earthquakes and extreme weather events. These natural disasters continue to deepen the ongoing humanitarian crisis, affecting communities that were already struggling with difficult living conditions.
The humanitarian assistance from India includes essential items designed to provide immediate relief to affected populations. The kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, and sleeping bags are particularly crucial for those who have lost their homes and basic necessities due to the natural disasters.
This gesture of solidarity comes at a critical time when international support is urgently needed to address the immediate needs of affected communities in Afghanistan. The overlapping disasters have created a complex emergency situation requiring coordinated humanitarian response efforts from multiple stakeholders.
