G7 Foreign Ministers to Prioritize Ukraine, Security, and Governance Reforms in Upcoming Meeting
According to a background briefing from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the forthcoming G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM) is poised to tackle pressing global issues, with a strong emphasis on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, reconstruction efforts, maritime security, and comprehensive reforms in global governance structures.
Agenda and Preparations for the Summit
Spokesperson Pascal Confavreux outlined that the meeting will occur shortly after an informal gathering of ministers during the UN General Assembly, serving as a crucial preparatory step for the G7 Leaders' Summit scheduled for June 13-15 in Evian. The discussions are designed to frame actionable outcomes for leaders to deliberate upon, ensuring the meeting yields concrete results rather than mere informal exchanges.
Focus on Ukraine and Reconstruction Efforts
A significant portion of the agenda will be dedicated to Ukraine, with sessions planned on reconstruction and broader regional security. The briefing highlighted aims to achieve at least three impactful results, including discussions on nuclear safety, humanitarian demining, and reconstruction funding. International financial institutions, such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will play a key role in mobilizing investments to support Ukraine's recovery and stability.
Maritime Security and Global Supply Chains
The meeting will also address broader threats, including narco-trafficking and maritime security, which are closely linked to critical minerals and global supply chains. A dedicated session is expected to focus on maritime routes and the exercise of freedom of navigation, underscoring the G7's commitment to safeguarding international waters and trade flows.
Governance Reforms and Multilateral Frameworks
On governance reforms, the G7 aims to push for more effective multilateral frameworks, with innovative approaches to integrate horizontal threats that endanger state sovereignties. This reflects a broader effort to rethink and strengthen global governance structures to better address contemporary challenges.
Engagement with Non-G7 Partners
To enhance outreach and collaboration, the meeting will include engagements with ministers from non-G7 countries, such as South Korea, India, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and Ukraine. These sessions, along with side events and working lunches, are scheduled for Thursday and Friday morning, facilitating deeper exchanges and fostering international cooperation.
Coordination and Expected Outcomes
Concluding the briefing, French officials stressed the importance of free and frank exchanges to maximize coordination. The G7 FMM is expected to set the tone for the leaders' summit in June, with a strong emphasis on delivering tangible outcomes related to Ukraine, international security, and institutional reforms, ultimately aiming to enhance global stability and governance.
