Ex-Diplomat Suresh Goel Issues Cautious Welcome to Trump's Iran Ceasefire Announcement
In a recent statement, former diplomat Suresh Goel has responded to US President Donald Trump's announcement of a five-day postponement of all strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure. Goel emphasized that while this move is welcome, its true value depends entirely on whether it holds in practice.
Goel Highlights Potential Ruse Behind Ceasefire
Speaking to ANI, Goel expressed skepticism about the ceasefire's intentions. He pointed out that Iran has denied any conversations or discussions with the USA regarding this development. Goel suggested that this could be a strategic ruse by President Trump aimed at bringing down crude oil prices, a critical factor in global economic stability.
"As far as the 5-day ceasefire is concerned, that's a welcome move only if it holds in practice," Goel stated. He added, "Nobody speaks the truth in a war. Therefore, till we have a confirmed outcome, we will have to take everything with a pinch of salt."
Trump's Claims of Military Dominance Over Iran
During the Swearing-In Ceremony for the Secretary of Homeland Security, President Trump made bold assertions about the US military's position in the conflict. He declared that the US has won the war, citing the decimation of Iran's navy and air force.
"We're in negotiations right now. I can tell you, they'd like to make a deal and who wouldn't if you were there? Look, their navy's gone, their air force is gone, their communications are gone. Pretty much everything they have is gone," Trump said.
He further emphasized US dominance, noting, "We literally have planes flying over Tehran and other parts of their country. They can't do a thing about it. For instance, if I wanna take down that power plant, they can't do a thing about it... They are totally defeated... Militarily, they are dead." Trump also assured that Iran will not possess any nuclear weapons.
Hope for a Durable Political Solution
Despite the skepticism, Goel expressed hope that the five-day ceasefire could pave the way for more lasting peace. He called for a durable political solution to emerge from this temporary halt in hostilities, underscoring the importance of diplomatic efforts over military actions.
"I do hope that these 5 days can lead to a more durable political solution," Goel concluded, highlighting the need for verified outcomes and sustained dialogue between the involved parties.
