India Hosts BIMSTEC Youth Heritage and Sustainability Immersion Programme
In a significant move to strengthen regional ties, India has successfully hosted the BIMSTEC Youth Heritage and Sustainability Immersion Programme from March 17 to 23, 2026, in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This initiative, organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in collaboration with Bharat Scouts and Guides, aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcements at the 6th BIMSTEC Summit aimed at enhancing youth exchanges among member nations.
Programme Overview and Objectives
The seven-day immersive program brought together over 80 young leaders from BIMSTEC countries, focusing on fostering people-to-people connectivity and advancing cooperation in key sectors such as culture, environment, and youth engagement. According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, the program was designed to empower participants as ambassadors of cultural diplomacy and sustainable development within the BIMSTEC framework.
Cultural Heritage Immersion in Bhopal
The first segment of the program took place in Bhopal, where participants engaged in a deep cultural heritage immersion. Activities included visits to museums, heritage sites, and tribal community centers, complemented by intercultural dialogue and reflective sessions. This part aimed to enhance appreciation for the shared cultural heritage among BIMSTEC nations, promoting mutual understanding and respect.
Environmental Leadership in Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve
The second part of the program was held in the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, featuring an environmental leadership module. Participants underwent forest ecology workshops, sustainability projects, eco-tourism initiatives, adventure activities, and team-building exercises. This segment was closely aligned with Prime Minister Modi's Mission LiFE initiative, encouraging sustainable lifestyles and environmental stewardship among the youth through experiential learning and collaborative efforts.
Key Outcomes and Impact
The programme yielded significant outcomes, including an enhanced appreciation of shared cultural and environmental heritage, strengthened leadership and intercultural competencies among participants, and the establishment of a BIMSTEC Youth Sustainability Network to ensure ongoing collaboration. Additionally, the Governor and Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh interacted with the participants, underscoring the program's importance in deepening regional engagement.

Earlier, on March 16, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs, in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra, organized the 1st BIMSTEC Young Professionals Exchange Programme in Mumbai and Pune. This event brought together 30 young innovators, technology developers, entrepreneurs, and other professionals from BIMSTEC member countries, further highlighting India's commitment to fostering youth exchanges and regional cooperation under the BIMSTEC framework.
