India has designated Bihar Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to represent the nation at the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who passed away on June 29, 2026, at the age of 87. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a statement released earlier today.
Official Delegation Announced
The MEA confirmed that the two dignitaries will lead India's delegation to the funeral ceremonies scheduled to take place in Tehran over the next two days. Lt Gen Hasnain, a former deputy chief of the Indian Army, has served as Bihar Governor since 2023. MoS Margherita, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Assam, handles key portfolios in the external affairs ministry.
The funeral is expected to draw world leaders and senior officials from across the globe, reflecting Khamenei's decades-long influence as Iran's supreme authority. Iran has declared a five-day mourning period.
Khamenei's Legacy and India-Iran Ties
Ayatollah Khamenei, who succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, was Iran's second Supreme Leader. His tenure saw significant geopolitical shifts, including the Iran-Iraq war aftermath, nuclear negotiations, and regional power struggles. India and Iran have historically maintained cordial relations, with cooperation on trade, energy, and connectivity projects such as the Chabahar port.
