India tops in electoral transparency among major democracies
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Monday asserted that India leads major democracies in electoral transparency. He made the statement while addressing a gathering of booth-level officers (BLOs) in Budgam district, about 12 km from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir.
Key remarks at Budgam event
Kumar emphasized that India's electoral process is unparalleled in its openness and efficiency. He highlighted that the Election Commission of India has implemented robust mechanisms to ensure free and fair elections, setting a benchmark for other nations. According to Kumar, the country's voter turnout and participation rates are among the highest globally, reflecting strong democratic engagement.
Role of booth-level officers
The Chief Election Commissioner praised the work of BLOs, calling them the backbone of the electoral system. He noted that their efforts in updating voter lists, assisting voters, and ensuring smooth polling are critical to maintaining transparency. Kumar urged them to continue their dedication, especially in regions like Budgam where logistical challenges exist.
India's electoral achievements
Kumar cited specific statistics, stating that India's voter turnout in the last general election exceeded 67%, with over 900 million registered voters. He also pointed to the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems as key tools that enhance trust. "Our electoral system is a model for the world," he said, attributing this to rigorous training and technology adoption.
Comparison with other democracies
Without naming specific countries, Kumar claimed that India outperforms other major democracies in terms of electoral integrity. He referenced international reports ranking India high on transparency indices. The CEC also addressed concerns about misinformation, stating that the Election Commission actively counters fake narratives through public awareness campaigns.
Future roadmap
Kumar outlined plans to further strengthen the electoral framework, including expanding voter education and leveraging digital platforms for real-time updates. He reiterated the Commission's commitment to conducting elections that reflect the will of the people, especially in sensitive areas like Jammu and Kashmir, where security and accessibility remain priorities.
