Bengaluru's Yelahanka-Dharmavaram Rail Corridor Upgraded to 130 kmph Speed Limit
In a significant development for rail infrastructure in southern India, the 161-kilometer rail route connecting Yelahanka in north Bengaluru to Dharmavaram in southern Andhra Pradesh has been officially sanctioned for a maximum operational speed of 130 kilometers per hour. This upgrade marks a substantial improvement from the previous speed limit of 110 kmph, which had been in place despite the corridor's status as a busy arterial route for northeast-bound trains originating from Bengaluru.
Official Approval and Engineering Oversight
The speed enhancement has been formally approved by the commissioner for rail safety (CRS) for the double-line corridor, with South Western Railway (SWR) chief track engineer Sunil N Masker overseeing the implementation. This authorization follows rigorous safety assessments and technical evaluations to ensure the infrastructure can support the increased velocity without compromising passenger safety or track integrity.
Strategic Importance and Regional Connectivity
This upgrade positions the Yelahanka-Dharmavaram stretch as only the second section within the Bengaluru division to achieve a 130 kmph speed limit, following the earlier enhancement of the Bengaluru-Jolarpettai line. The move is strategically aimed at boosting regional connectivity and reducing travel times for commuters and freight services alike.
A primary beneficiary of this speed upgrade will be the Yeshwantpur-Kacheguda Vande Bharat Express, a priority connection service linking Bengaluru with Hyderabad. Vande Bharat trains are classified as semi-high-speed trains capable of operating at a maximum speed of 160 kmph. While the new 130 kmph limit still falls short of the train's full potential, it is expected to significantly enhance the average speed of the service, leading to more efficient and timely journeys between the two major metropolitan centers.
Infrastructure Developments and Future Prospects
In parallel with this speed upgrade, significant infrastructure work is progressing on the quadrupled stretch between Byappanahalli and Bengaluru Cantonment. This project involves the addition of newly-laid third and fourth lines across a 5-kilometer section, which includes the Bengaluru East halt station. A statutory inspection and speed trial for these new lines were conducted over Tuesday and Wednesday by the CRS.
An SWR official has confirmed that the inspection was successful, and authorization has been received from the CRS to commission this stretch. This development is part of broader efforts to modernize and expand rail capacity in the Bengaluru region, addressing growing passenger and freight demands while improving overall network efficiency.
The combined upgrades on the Yelahanka-Dharmavaram corridor and the Byappanahalli-Bengaluru Cantonment stretch represent a concerted push by Indian Railways to enhance speed, safety, and service quality in one of the country's most dynamic economic corridors. These improvements are anticipated to have positive ripple effects on trade, tourism, and daily commutes, reinforcing Bengaluru's role as a pivotal hub in southern India's transportation network.
