Families of Air India Crash Victims Urge PM Modi to Release Black Box Data
In a poignant appeal, approximately 30 grieving families of victims from the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding the release of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder, commonly known as the black box data. This move comes ten months after the devastating incident that claimed 260 lives, highlighting the families' persistent quest for answers and transparency regarding the calamity.
The Tragic Incident and Its Aftermath
The Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft bound for London, crashed shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The plane plunged into a medical college hostel complex, bursting into flames and resulting in the deaths of 241 out of 242 people onboard, along with 19 individuals on the ground. The catastrophic event has left a deep scar on the community and raised urgent questions about aviation safety and investigation protocols.
Families' Demand for Truth and Transparency
During a meeting held in Ahmedabad on Saturday, the families emphasized that the release of the black box and CVR data is crucial to uncovering the truth behind the crash. They expressed their frustration and sorrow, stating, "We want to know the truth about what caused the crash and whether there was any technical problem." In their letter to the Prime Minister, they argued that access to this data is essential for understanding the root causes and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Copies of the letter were also sent to key authorities, including the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The families have made a specific demand: if the black box data cannot be made public due to regulatory or security concerns, it should at least be shared privately with them to provide some closure and insight into the events leading to the crash.
Investigation Status and Pending Responses
The AAIB had submitted its preliminary investigation report in July 2025, but the final report is not expected until June 2026, according to PTI sources. This timeline has added to the families' anxiety, as they await detailed findings that could shed light on the crash. The airline's response to the families' plea remains pending, leaving many in a state of uncertainty and hope for a swift resolution.
