The music-loving state of Meghalaya welcomed the New Year 2026 with grand festivities across its hills, turning the page on a memorable 2025 filled with both challenges and triumphs. The celebrations, which began around Christmas, reached their peak on New Year's Eve, drawing large crowds and tourists to the state capital, Shillong.
Festive Atmosphere Engulfs Shillong
From the eve of Christmas, Shillong transformed into a hub of activity, adorned with dazzling lights and festive decorations. The extended festive period attracted a significant influx of visitors, keen to experience the unique holiday atmosphere of the Northeast. A couple from Guwahati shared their experience, stating they had been staying in Shillong since Christmas specifically to enjoy the awesome New Year ambiance.
Music and Merriment at the Heart of the City
The commercial centre of Police Bazar, locally known as Khyndailad, became the epicentre of celebrations. Open-air musical events here delighted both locals and tourists alike. On New Year's Eve, despite the winter chill, large numbers of enthusiasts flocked to this area. To ensure smooth and safe celebrations, the city traffic police implemented a no-entry zone for vehicles on roads leading to Khyndailad, allowing people to enjoy leisurely strolls through the beautifully lit streets.
Traditional Welcomes and Midnight Cheers
In a display of hardy tradition, a group of 'hot-hearts' gathered to take midnight dips in the ice-cold waters of a city swimming pool, symbolising a fresh beginning for the new year. As the clock struck midnight, the moment was heralded by the soft sound of the old Shillong siren, the resonant tolling of church bells, and bursts of fireworks, filling the air with cheer and hope for 2026.
Concerts and cultural events were organised in all districts of Meghalaya, with people exchanging warm wishes and greetings. The successful and vibrant celebrations highlighted the state's resilient spirit and its reputation as a premier destination for festive tourism in India's Northeast.
