Odisha to Install 20 Modern LED Billboards & Signboards at Key Tourist Spots
Odisha's Digital Push: LED Billboards at 20 Tourist Sites

The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) is embarking on a significant digital upgrade to enhance the visitor experience across the state. The corporation will install state-of-the-art LED billboards and high-visibility retro-reflective signboards at key tourist destinations. This initiative aims to simplify navigation, provide real-time information, and give tourism promotion a fresh, modern push.

Tech-Enabled Tourism: The Project Details

OTDC has formally begun the process of selecting a technical partner to implement this ambitious project. The plan focuses on 20 prime locations, including major attractions like Puri beach, Swargadwar, the Blue Flag beach, Konark bus stand, and various Panthanivas properties. The digital billboards will be equipped with advanced features such as cloud-based software, wireless connectivity, and 4K video playback capabilities.

This technological backbone will allow OTDC to update content in real-time, broadcasting tourism campaigns, event information, and essential public announcements instantly. In parallel, large retro-reflective hoardings, measuring up to 12 metres by 6 metres, will be erected at crucial junctions like Baidaspur, Chandanpur, and the Pipili toll gate. These signboards are specifically designed to improve night-time visibility, thereby enhancing safety for travellers on the road.

Addressing Tourist Challenges with Digital Solutions

Officials highlight that the move directly addresses common pain points for visitors. "Odisha has so much to offer, but sometimes visitors struggle to find clear directions or updates on events. These one-of-a-kind boards will make navigation simpler and keep tourists informed," stated an OTDC official. This sentiment is echoed by travellers like Ananya Sharma from Delhi, who shared, "When I visited Puri last year, I relied on locals for directions. Digital boards will be a big help for people like us who come from outside the state."

A Step Towards a Smarter, More Interactive Destination

Tourism experts have welcomed the initiative, seeing it as a strategic step in positioning Odisha as a forward-thinking destination. Renowned tourism analyst Rajiv Sethi remarked, "This is a step towards blending technology with heritage. It will make the experience more interactive and attract younger travellers." He further added that the project is about creating a welcoming environment and showcasing Odisha's cultural richness through a contemporary lens.

To ensure long-term reliability, the project includes a comprehensive 5-year maintenance plan. OTDC has invited bids from reputed agencies and aims to finalize the selection process by the end of January. Officials have indicated that the physical installation of these systems is scheduled to commence early this year, marking a tangible upgrade to the state's tourism infrastructure.
