Mangaluru Plans Permanent Heli-Tourism After Festival Success

The Dakshina Kannada district administration wants to launch permanent heli-tourism packages. This move comes after a successful trial during the recent Karavali Utsava festival. Officials now seek proposals from operators to run regular helicopter services.

Strong Demand for Aerial Tourism

District Commissioner Darshan HV confirmed the administration's interest. He said proposals are already coming in following the festival's positive response. The district will also examine creating permanent helipads to support this initiative.

The coastal region shows significant demand for heli-tourism. This area hosts famous religious sites, educational institutions, and modern hospitals. Aerial services could greatly boost the local tourism sector.

Successful Trial Run

The festival heli-ride service began on December 26th. Over ten days, it served 1,032 passengers. Each person paid Rs 3,500 for a seven-minute flight. Visitors from Kerala, Udupi, and Karwar particularly enjoyed the experience.

This strong response indicates real potential for expanded heli-tourism. The administration sees it as a small effort with plans for future expansion.

Expansion Plans Under Consideration

Current festival activities focus mainly on beaches. Future proposals could include other locations. Officials are considering heli-tourism opportunities in:

  • Puttur
  • Sullia
  • Beltangady
  • Western Ghats areas including Kudremukh National Park

Multiple Benefits for the Region

Helicopter services could serve various purposes beyond tourism. Mangaluru's status as a port city brings foreign cruise ships from December to April. These tourists often have limited time to visit nearby attractions in Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts.

The city also functions as an educational and medical hub. Many visitors come for treatments at private hospitals. Helicopter services could assist with:

  1. Emergency cardiac treatments
  2. Transporting donated organs quickly
  3. Efficient travel to religious sites in neighboring districts

An official explained that heli-tourism would benefit those wanting to visit various attractions. Religious sites in districts like Chikkamagaluru and Udupi would become more accessible.

The state government is preparing separate tourism policies for coastal areas. These plans aim to attract more investors to the region. Permanent heli-tourism packages could become a key part of this development strategy.
