Bengaluru Airport to Get India's First Automated People Mover by 2023
KIA to Launch First Automated Inter-Terminal Transit in India

Passengers at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) can soon look forward to a hassle-free experience when switching between terminals. The airport operator, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), is moving ahead with plans to install an automated people mover (APM), a driverless transit system that will be the first of its kind in India.

What is an Automated People Mover?

An APM is a rail-based, driverless system designed specifically for short-distance travel where high frequency is essential. These systems, which can use technologies like monorail or rubber tyres, are commonly seen at major international airports, large theme parks, and expansive campuses. Their primary function is to efficiently and quickly move large numbers of people between fixed points. Many global hubs in the United States, China, Malaysia, and Singapore already successfully operate such systems to enhance passenger convenience.

The Bengaluru Airport Project Gains Momentum

BIAL has officially initiated the process by inviting bids for design consultancy services, with the submission deadline set for this Wednesday. This marks a significant step towards making the initial announcement from December 2023 a reality. Once operational, the APM will replace the current fleet of electric shuttle buses that ferry passengers between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. This upgrade promises a faster, more reliable, and modern transfer experience for millions of travelers passing through India's third-busiest airport.

A Parallel Push for Luxury Hospitality

In a related development aimed at elevating the airport's infrastructure, BIAL's subsidiary, Bangalore Airport Hotel Limited (BAHL), has also issued a Request for Proposal (RFP). They are seeking consultants to conduct a feasibility study for an ultra-luxury hotel to be built on the airport premises. This move indicates a broader strategy to transform KIA into a world-class aviation hub with premium amenities. When questioned about specific timelines for these projects, BIAL declined to comment, stating it is standard policy not to discuss initiatives that are still at the tendering stage.

The introduction of the APM system at Kempegowda International Airport represents a major leap in Indian aviation infrastructure, setting a new benchmark for passenger connectivity and operational efficiency within airport grounds.
