The scenic Kabini backwaters in Mysuru's HD Kote taluk are witnessing an unprecedented surge in boating activity. This dramatic shift comes as a direct consequence of the Karnataka state government's decision to suspend all wildlife safaris in the renowned Bandipur and Nagarahole tiger reserves.
Safety Concerns Spark Safari Shutdown
The government's move to ban jeep and bus safaris in November last year was driven by pressing safety concerns. A series of fatal tiger attacks, resulting in three deaths in recent months, prompted the drastic action. Subsequent combing operations by forest officials led to the capture of several tigers. With New Year celebrations also being restricted at local resorts, tourists have been left seeking alternative ways to experience the region's natural beauty.
Boating Emerges as the Popular Alternative
In the absence of jungle safaris, water-based exploration has become the preferred choice. Tour operators report a significant surge in visitor interest for boating in recent days. "After the closure of jungle safaris, many visitors now prefer boating," said Mahesh, a local tour operator. Private resorts have been quick to capitalize on this new demand, significantly increasing the availability of boating services. Tourists are opting for these boat rides to enjoy the surrounding woods and spot wildlife from a safe distance on the water.
Regulatory Challenges and Livelihood Impact
The safari restrictions have had a tangible economic impact, causing revenue loss for the forest department and affecting the livelihoods of tour operators, guides, and local vendors over the last two months. The boating boom, while filling a gap, brings its own set of challenges. Ganesh, assistant executive engineer of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited, confirmed that many private resort owners have started operating boats. While authorities have instructed them to implement adequate safety measures, including providing life jackets, there is a growing problem of unauthorized operations.
"There have been complaints of many resorts operating boats without taking permission from the authorities," Ganesh stated. In response, he indicated that the forest and tourism departments are planning a joint operation soon to crack down on these unauthorized boat rides, ensuring tourist safety and regulatory compliance in the burgeoning water tourism sector.
