Visakhapatnam, popularly known as Vizag, has cemented its position on India's tourism map with a breathtaking new landmark. The city has officially unveiled the country's longest cantilever glass skywalk, offering visitors a heart-pounding walk 262 meters along a cliff edge at a staggering height of 862 feet.
A Landmark Inauguration at Kailasagiri
The visionary project was officially opened to the public at the scenic Kailasagiri hilltop park. The inauguration ceremony was led by Vizag MP M. Sribharath and Mayor P. Srinivasa Rao. The event was also graced by the presence of MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu and VMRDA chairman Pranav Gopal. This skywalk is set to become a new benchmark for tourism infrastructure in India, combining engineering marvel with natural beauty.
Engineering Marvel Meets Panoramic Beauty
The primary allure of the skywalk is the unmatched, sweeping vista it provides. From its elevated vantage point, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the entire Visakhapatnam cityscape and the vast expanse of the Bay of Bengal. The strategic placement was no accident; a week-long survey was conducted to identify the optimal spot on Kailasagiri hilltop to maximize these breathtaking scenic views of the coastline and surrounding hills.
Engineered as a cantilever structure, the bridge extends out from the hilltop to provide superior viewing angles without obstructive supports. The design ensures both structural stability and an enhanced thrill factor. For safety and comfort, while the structure can technically support over 100 people simultaneously, access is limited to 40 visitors at a time.
Built for Safety and Endurance
Recognizing the region's vulnerability to cyclonic storms like Hudhud, the skywalk has been built to withstand extreme weather. Its wind-resistant design can endure wind speeds of up to 250 km/h, ensuring visitor safety year-round. The walking surface itself is constructed using toughened, high-strength glass panels capable of withstanding significant impact, providing a secure experience while maintaining the thrilling illusion of walking on air.
The entire project was completed in a span of seven to eight months, with meticulous planning and monitoring at every stage from design to final construction. This careful execution has resulted in a facility that meets the highest modern engineering and safety standards.
A Major Boost for Vizag Tourism
This glass skywalk is a central part of a broader strategy to enhance Visakhapatnam's tourism appeal. By offering this unique blend of thrill, scenic beauty, and safety, it significantly strengthens Kailasagiri hilltop park's position as a must-visit destination. The attraction is expected to draw not only local crowds but also domestic and international tourists seeking unforgettable experiences. The opening marks a new chapter for experiential tourism in Andhra Pradesh, inviting adventure seekers to literally take a walk on the wild side.
