Himachal Pradesh's Tourism Landscape Shifts Under Congress Government's Vision
Himachal Pradesh is experiencing a significant transformation in its tourism sector under the Congress government's 'Vyavastha Parivartan' vision. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced this change on Wednesday. He stated that the new approach aligns conservation efforts with livelihood creation and economic growth. This marks a clear departure from the previous BJP regime's policies.
Revival of Water-Based Tourism at Key Locations
Sukhu highlighted the revival of water-based tourism as a central focus. Pong Dam Lake, a designated Ramsar Wetland, is now being developed into a premier bird-watching destination. The best time for this activity is between November and February. Plans include introducing eco-tourism attractions such as Shikara rides and floating bird-watching decks. These facilities will allow visitors and ornithologists to observe thousands of migratory birds arriving from Siberia and Mongolia.
Additionally, the government is transforming Gobind Sagar in Bilaspur and Tattapani near Shimla into vibrant water-tourism hubs. These locations will feature a variety of activities including boating, canoeing, kayaking, speedboats, houseboats, and other water sports facilities. Bilaspur, in particular, is emerging as a national hub for water-based adventure tourism. The area will host festivals and offer structured facilities that directly benefit local communities.
Expansion of Eco-Tourism and Youth Entrepreneurship
Beyond water tourism, Himachal Pradesh's new eco-tourism policy aims to open 77 new eco-tourism sites across the state. This initiative is projected to generate nearly Rs 200 crore over the next five years. The chief minister also emphasized the tourism start-up scheme designed to support youth entrepreneurship. This scheme encourages young people to engage in homestays, hotels, and food services. It promotes employment opportunities and empowers local residents.
"These initiatives reflect a decisive shift from neglect to responsible growth," Sukhu asserted. "Natural resources are now driving livelihoods, economic progress, and sustainable tourism in the state." The government's strategy focuses on creating a balanced approach where environmental conservation supports economic development and community welfare.
