In response to last month's devastating fire in Arpora, the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) is pushing for tougher measures against unregulated tourism activities. The corporation emphasizes that existing rules need better enforcement to prevent such incidents.
Implementation Challenges Highlighted
GTDC General Manager Gavin Dias acknowledged that Goa already has robust regulations in place. However, he pointed out that the real issue lies in ensuring compliance and effective implementation. "We must ensure we are not involved in any unregulated activities," Dias stated firmly. "We also need to guarantee that violations are reported promptly and that concerned departments take immediate action."
Speaking at Forest Diversity Festival
Dias made these remarks on Monday during the Goa forest diversity festival in Panaji. He highlighted how unregulated operators often gain an unfair advantage. "Everyone seeks bargains," he explained. "Under current tax structures, unregulated businesses can see huge windfalls compared to regulated ones. This makes legitimate businesses uncompetitive."
Call for Public Responsibility
The GTDC manager urged both tourists and local residents to take responsibility. He asked people to refuse participation in unregulated activities and report any violations they encounter. "Public cooperation is crucial for effective regulation," Dias emphasized.
Long-Term Solutions Proposed
Beyond immediate enforcement, Dias suggested education and livelihood creation as sustainable solutions. He noted that while ease of doing business has simplified procedures, the state encourages entrepreneurs to follow prescribed guidelines. "This approach benefits everyone," he concluded. "It creates a win-win situation for the state exchequer, visitors, and business owners alike."
