Goa Government Takes Firm Stand Against Harassment of International Tourists

In a decisive move to protect Goa's reputation as a premier global destination, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte declared on Tuesday that the state government will take stringent action against youths and tourists who harass international visitors by aggressively seeking selfies with them on beaches. The announcement came during a legislative assembly session where concerns were raised about the safety and dignity of women tourists in particular.

Addressing a Growing Social Media-Driven Problem

Minister Khaunte acknowledged that due to pervasive social media influences, many young tourists arriving in Goa operate under the misguided impression that "anything goes" in the coastal state. He emphatically stated that the government is clear: "Nothing of the sort will be tolerated." The minister highlighted a troubling new trend where youths specifically target foreign tourists on beaches, insisting on taking selfies and causing significant discomfort and harassment.

"We took cognizance of the matter raised by the member and we are in tune to act on this," Khaunte affirmed, responding to a zero-hour mention by Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar. The MLA had drawn the assembly's attention to the urgent public importance of safeguarding women tourists, citing recent incidents that risk tarnishing Goa's image as a safe and welcoming destination.

Strengthening Enforcement and Security Measures

Khaunte revealed that he has already discussed the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, and concrete steps are being implemented to bolster enforcement. These measures include deploying additional police personnel on beaches through the specialized Tourism Police Unit (TPU), working in close coordination with local police stations. The minister emphasized that continuous action and arrests are being made wherever necessary to curb such unacceptable behavior.

"We also asked the TPU and the CM to increase the number of women constables to further strengthen safety and security monitoring," Khaunte added, underscoring the commitment to creating a secure environment for all visitors, especially women.

Protecting Goa's Economic Backbone

MLA Sankalp Amonkar stressed that tourism is the fundamental backbone of Goa's economy, and the safety of every visitor must remain an absolute priority. He warned that incidents of harassment could create a perception of insecurity, potentially damaging tourist confidence and, consequently, the livelihoods of thousands of Goans who depend on the tourism industry.

"Such incidents are deeply concerning and risk tarnishing the image of Goa as a safe, welcoming, and world-class tourism destination," Amonkar stated. He noted that harassment has been particularly noticeable in beach areas and other popular tourist locations, calling for immediate and effective intervention.

A Clear Message to Offenders

The government's firm stance sends a clear message that Goa will not allow its global reputation to be compromised by the irresponsible actions of a few. Minister Khaunte concluded with a resolute declaration: "Goa's name cannot be spoilt because of such behaviour." The proactive measures aim to ensure that the state continues to be celebrated as a paradise for tourists from around the world, free from harassment and full of the genuine hospitality for which it is renowned.
