First Snowfall of Chillai Kalan Blankets Jammu & Kashmir

The onset of the harshest winter period, Chillai Kalan, has draped Jammu and Kashmir in a breathtaking blanket of white, transforming its iconic valleys into picture-perfect winter wonderlands. The season's first significant snowfall on Sunday, December 21, 2025, marked the beginning of this 40-day phase of severe cold, bringing joy to tourists and altering daily life across the region.

Winter's Grand Arrival: A Scenic Transformation

Popular tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg witnessed a magical transformation as fresh snow coated everything from pine trees and mountain slopes to vehicles, rooftops, and roads. In the Ganderbal district's Sonamarg, both residents and visitors were seen soaking in the winter magic, with many enjoying horse rides amid the falling snowflakes. The area, located about 90 kilometres from Srinagar, received its first snowfall of the season, creating mesmerising snowscapes perfect for photography and serene experiences.

Simultaneously, Gulmarg was abuzz with tourists reveling in the fresh spell of snowfall on the very first day of Chillai Kalan. The visual treat wasn't limited to these spots alone. Chandanwari in the Anantnag district also experienced the season's first snowfall, turning the valley into a pristine white canvas, as captured in stunning photographs.

Understanding Chillai Kalan: The 40-Day Deep Freeze

The term 'Chillai Kalan' originates from Persian, where 'Chilla' means forty days and 'Kalan' signifies major cold. This period, which started on December 21, 2025, and will continue until January 31, 2026, is characterised by sub-zero temperatures, frozen water bodies, and landscapes locked in frost and snow. It is the core of winter in Kashmir, known for its intensity.

During this time, the region typically experiences significant snowfall, which can disrupt daily routines. The mercury often plunges to extremely low levels, leading to the freezing of famous water bodies, including sections of Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake. Despite heavy fog reported over Dal Lake, boat rides and sightseeing activities were still operational, adding a mystical charm to the experience.

Weather Patterns and Official Advisories

The cold wave has firmly gripped the region. Srinagar recorded a notable dip in temperature, showing a change of -4°C from December 20, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The city continues to experience persistent cold conditions with foggy mornings. Other weather stations, like Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, recorded minimum temperatures between 2.5°C and 3.8°C.

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches and light to moderate precipitation in the plains in the coming days. In light of Chillai Kalan, authorities have advised both residents and visitors to take necessary precautions against the severe cold. People are urged to monitor weather updates regularly, especially in areas prone to sudden snowfall and dense fog, to ensure safety.

The breathtaking snowfall not only signifies the start of a challenging period for locals but also unveils the unparalleled beauty of Jammu and Kashmir in winter, promising an enchanting yet starkly beautiful experience for all who witness it.
